I painted this thinking that the lady looked stern but protective of her slightly confused husband. However, it is an example of the artist having no control over the response from the public. Whenever I have shown it women, in particular, have laughed and commented that he looks as if he's in trouble. I therefore abandoned my original title, 'Thomas and Hannah' and asked one viewer for an alternative - and that's what I've used!
